My Final Decision in Dropping iB

I made the final decision to drop IB about one or two weeks ago - before this I had applied for next year as an academic student but I was 80% sure I would switch back to IB by the end of the year. After looking at my current marks and the field I may be heading in, I decided it would be better for me if I drop the program b/c my marks are horrible right now (low 70s) and at my school the IB is more focused on the sciences so if I want to head toward the business field I should leave the program. I feel this is the right decision but it's a really hard decision b/c I spent the last 3 years thinking I would graduate high school with an IB diploma. I find it hard b/c I know I can finish the program but it's the marks that are bringing me down - my marks untranslated are really low but once translated it should be good enough for 80s - which are decent but not great.

When I drop I know I'm going to be under a lot of pressure b/c if I have an average lower than 90% I don't know what I will do with myself. But at the same time I know if I stay with the program there will be even more pressure with the IOC, ToK essay, Extended Essay, and the CAS hours. I think I would actually be fine with doing the IOC, the ToK essay, Extended Essay, and the CAS hours but what's really dragging me from continuing is IB chem - I don't like chem and I don't think I will be able to survive IB chem, especially since it's HL. It's also a hard decision b/c I know I will be able to de decent/well in IB English & IB Econ. so it's kind of a tough spot. What really made me change my decision is my mark in IB bio right now - 70s, in bio I realized how much I despise doing labs - especially IB style labs.

Overall, even though my marks are terrible this year I'm glad I chose to continue to do Yr. 1 IB - I learnt a lot during this year and the friendships I made over the 3 year period of Pre-IB & IB are truly amazing. With the friends I have supporting me I feel like I can conquer the world. I'm truly going to miss the friends I have who are staying in IB (especially K) and I really want to thank them for our great friendship.

Moving onwards, I really need a 90 average next year and I need to do well with the SATs in Sept - my dad thinks I should apply to NYU, Brown, & UPenn - there's a chance I'll get in if my average is a 90+ next year. If I don't get into the schools in the States I really want to get into Rotman (still a 90%+ school) and maybe switch to somewhere in Europe after first year. I'm not really sure if I even want to study business but it's such a broad field I can always switch out of it if I hate it a lot.

Done IB MATH SL P2! I feel so liberated!

Done. I'm done the math exams! So happy, free, and liberated right now.

Before I left for school this morning I was reading some stuff off the event wall on fb and people in TZ1 were saying P2 was hard but while it was harder than P1 I can't say it was that bad. I messed up on the probability question with the "what is the probability of _____ if the probability is 15%" - I did most of it so I should get part marks. I'm also not sure if my area for the last question is correct but I know my steps were pretty much all correct so I should get part marks for that. I hope IBO doesn't set the grade boundaries too high b/c I really need a 6. 6 = 90% = ticket to Rotman (or Queen's Commerence but I don't want to go to Queens' b/c it's such a small hip town).

I think I did ok on the exam. Crossing my fingers it will at least be a 6.

Feeling happy, liberated, and free right now.

Lunch with J, Jonny-Boy, YMK, V.T., &M.L. was fun - "Teresa's good intelligent boy" - that made me laugh so hard. Those beef noodles were good but instead of sweet&sour soup&noodles we got some random bowl of noodles which was really gross.

YMK was really pissing me off today at bubble tea when he kept throwing these chocolate wrapers down the front of my dress so they would land in my boobs. HONESTLY, can you not? and stop touching my hair, I hate it when other people touch my hair. - I did feel bad when I made an O comment - I had no idea they broke up.....

It was kind of awkward the whole time we were at bubble tea since the guys were looking at Asian magazines and rating girls....the only girls there were J and I. I do appreciate V.T. for looking at the guys in Asian magazines and commenting & trying to find an asian guy we think is hot b/c he made it less awkward for the two of us. He lost the bet though b/c we didn't find any hot asian men - I find it so funny how I don't find Asian men hot yet I'm Asian.

J & I went to Winners to find sunglasses for her (we found Oscar de la Renta ones for less than 20$!) and YMK came with us which I found really weird since neither of us knew him well...oh well.

Gelato @ FMP isn't as great as Dolce Gelato downtown - the limone was less crisp & fresh but still good. J & I just chilled around and talked about her &N, me & my past crushes (J, J, &A) and just other girl stuff. OMG. I hate to admit it but today, when the guys asked each other what they look for in girls I really wanted them to answer each other - apparently they like taller girls (here goes my theory that guys like shorter girls.....).

We both agreed we just want someone that will love us for who we are - I told her what I told D. last night after the whole D thing and she thought my words were very cute. :).

The conversation continued as we went back to my place and honestly, I feel so much closer to her now - we were pretty close in gr 9 but b/c we never had classes in gr 10 & sem 1 together we grew apart. After an afternoon of bitching, girltalk, and just memories I'm all happy and semi-ready to tackle my mountain of bio.

Off to do some bio & run (was going to speedwork & time trials w/my dad tonight but the wind is rendering me to delay that for a day or 2) - racing on Sun. & I'm not ready.

IB Math Exam Paper 1

Just had a bit of food after Paper 1, I want to kiss the person who wrote P1 for N. American TZ1. Once upon a time I was really good at math but this year, I kind of sucked but honestly P1 was pretty good in my opinion. I don't think I got a 7 b/c I probably made quite a few errors in the steps but somehow ended up with the correct final answer b/c that's the way I am. I hope I didn't lose too many marks b/c of lack of steps or something stupid like an addition or subtration error (I almost made a subtration error on the matrix question! but I caught myself). I'm hoping I got a 6 on this paper (a high 6).

The probability question & the log question I know I didn't get right but I did do most parts of it correctly so I'm hoping for part marks!

Since P1 was pretty easy enough I'm so scared P2 tomorrow is going to rape me. I still have some issues with integrating ln so I need to practice more tonight!

***I felt like I was going to barf today from the time I woke up until I read the exam
***so stressed this morning that my 5k run was torture and I couldn't run all of it, my muscles were dying

Off to go study for P2.

Crunch Time: Studying for IB MATH

Eh. not particularly the best race I've ran but it was better than Southlake. The weather definitely played a huge part in my results. I hate the weather right now,it's been humid and hot for the last two days - it's going to rain but it hasn't yet. Ever since I popped something in my hip last fall I've had issues with my hip before it rains - it just aches and aches before it rains though it doesn't ache when it rains.

I started off well at a 4:20 pace give or take but around 3 or 4k I had to twice b/c BOTH of my shoes became untied. Lovely, eh? Around 5 or 6k I had to stop again b/c my hip was aching really badly - it was 6:00/k - ouch. I picked it up again at 7-8k for a 4:37. My 8-9 k was basically a 4:00 flat. The last k came in at 4:19 with a huge sprint in the end - I'm just so disappointed b/c if it were not for my hip I could have done a sub 45 easy.

Sporting Life 10k 2010: 46:52

Our trek home was fun though, we kind of lost some people who were supposed to go home with Mac & Civ but eh they know their way downtown, if needed they can take the subway to Finch and hop on a bus. It was starting to drizzle a tiny bit when we hopped onto the Dufferin bus and the whole bus was packed with runners. Civ was wearing an Iron Man hat and some guys asked if he did one - he was forced to admit he never did it, it was funny at the time. One of the conversations on the subway was totally inappropriate, manscaping, it was really awkward b/c I was the only girl in that conversation (4 guy teachers, my guy friend, and myself). Never want to repeat that conversation again, ever. Especially with these people.

!saw Pascal today, haven't seen her since last June, it was nice.

It feels really weird b/c the Sporting Life 10k that I did last year was my first road race and now, roughly a year later I've done so many more road races, the count up to today:
-4 x 10k (Sporting Life twice, Angus Glen 10k, Toronto Island Girl 10k)
-2 x half marathon (Toronto Waterfront Half, Southlake Half)

Personal bests:
10k - 45:59 @ the Island Girl 10k
Half marathon - 1:42:40 @ the Toronto Waterfront Half
5k - 21:00 - trail @ school

I know I can get under 45 and maybe into the 43-44 range, physically I am able to do it now as long as the race course is fast and the weather conditions are good. I've also done training runs where I hit 21k at around 1:22-26 so I know I need to aim for that for the next half (Toronto Waterfront half) b/c I know I can do it physically - mentally, I still need some work.

I have yet to do a 5k on road and I'm looking forward to that next week as long as it isn't too hot. I'm hoping to hit the sub 21 range which I think I can do b/c I've done the trail in 21:00 and there are hills on the trail.

Got to get back to studying

Notes:
***Some guy died during the Sporting Life today, he was 60 something and I guess he overexerted himself. One of the teachers with us is a fireman and he checked for the guy's vitals. RIP.
***we came in as the 2nd overall school - if it were not for the fact I had a bad race we would have came in 1st
***WILL IT RAIN ALREADY, MY HIP REALLY ACHES

Predicted Marks are so Bad!

I got my IB predicted marks for Math&French today, they are soo bad. I'm not getting into university with my predicted marks, no way.

French - 5 (translated it's 80-89)
Math - 4 (translated it's 70-79)

I'm so upset, I know I can do better, I slept through all of Gr 11 math last year and I ended up with 90+ - there is no way my final mark is going to be a 4. I know I can get a 6 (7 is ruled out b/c I didn't do too well in my math portfolios), from now till May 5,6 I need to work my ass off and study until I know the whole IB Standard Math curriculum by heart. I think my predicted mark for math is so low b/c it's mostly based on the exam I wrote in Jan (which doesn't count) & I basically failed the Jan Exam since I had no power the 24h before the exam and lost 2-3 days of studying b/c the power was on and off for those 3 days. I can not get a 5, a 5 will not get me into university - especially since math is supposed to be one of my strongest subjects.

French Group Oral - 20/30 (level 5)
Individual Oral - 21/30 (level 5 - high 5)
I think I can get a 6 in French; I can not get lower than a 6. If I get the same mark I got on my Jan exam in May then I am set on the borderline of a 5/6 in french. I have almost 2 months to learn idiomatic expressions by heart to elevate my french writing - also need to use as many pronouns relatives, subjontif &etc when doing the written pieces. I also need to learn to not freak out at the exam table - what a great Victoria Day I'm going to have, writing a freaking french exam - at least it's not at the YRAA date like I though.

***I really think they should add 10% to our bio mark b/c we're not even learning Gr 11 stuff, we're doing pretty much pure Gr 12 Bio

Failed 3/4

Ah Mon Dieu! C'est fini!

Bio Quest - let's not talk about it, it was bad and the fact my french oral was cut my time short makes it worst

Orale Francais - in the speech part I failed, I stuttered, paused, & repeated myself. I have never done this bad, it went well until I started talking about the controversies surrounding Brigitte Bardot where I forgot how to say sexual harassment in french and from then onwards it went downhill b/c I started to freak out and hyperventilate - you can hear my shaking.

The conversation part went rather well since I was able to ask her questions and there was no delay in my answers but for some reason I wasn't able to remember the word for "answer" so instead of saying, "dans le club de "reach for the top" on doit donner une response à beaucoup des questions" I went the long way and said a bunch of stuff, "l'objectif de le club de "reach for the top" et respondre les questions". I was kind of surprised at how smoothly the conversation went - I didn't need to translate anything from english to french or from french to english; it just flowed.

ToK Presentation: It was extremely cute and Hallarn loved it, line of the day:
Spinoza: You're just jealous the part of God in my body is more beautiful than the part of God in yours

Math Quiz - failed. I missed up singular matrix & non singular matrix and I messed up #3b. arg. not good.

Going to bed early tonight after only 45min last night, bio lab this weekend & must do italian band assignment for class on Sat.

***woke up at 7/8 pm, went for run at 8, came home at 9
so exhausted

***Fun Side Note:
my friend J.L. came home from HK last night, oral today, he was dead sick so he wore a Asian mask to school, did his oral then went home - laughed so hard when I saw him in his mask. Thankfully I went before him so I didn't get his germs from the mic.

Un-Needed Rest is Horrible

Since my knees are missing pieces of skin as well as my elbow and hand I haven't ran since my 50m on Sunday and it's killing me. I don't care but I have to run tomorrow - I was going to try for a run today but it was raining & snowing and I was told not to get any of my wounds wet in case of bacteria/infections - apparently if either one occurs in my left elbow or left knee I'm in big trouble. I wish I could at least do some core work or squats but that requires some excessive bending and that hurts like hell right now.

I need to run so bad, with all the stuff this week I'm so stressed and the only way to unstress is by running. I have a ToK test tomorrow & a bio lab:S. Thursday is going to be even worst, have to get to school by 7:30 to start writing my bio quest since my French oral is at 9:00-9:15 (during 1st) so inorder to have time to finish my quest I have to get to school really early, I have also have the toK presentation, and a math test that day - 4/4 evaluations:S.

I'm so scared for my French oral, my teacher has a really weird accent (cross b/w quebecois & english) so I can't understand her and 2/3 of the oral is a conversation. I really really hope mine doesn't get sent to the IBO. As of this moment I'm not even done writing my scripted part however the stuff I have written is decent enough and I can just say it - I really hope I get a 6 for French (and a 6 for math).

My ToK presentation is going to be awesome, we're doing a Philsopher's AA with Kant, Hume, Descates, Locke, & Spinoza (ME!) where we kind of discuss our beliefs (as our philosopher) and we bring in aspects of their life - it's really quirky and cute. I hope we get a 90 on it :)

Kind of disappointed in myself about the bio test that we got back, I didn't even make the 70 mark - I'm like.5% off - I knew the stuff but I made so many stupid mistakes like switch up Na & K for the protein pump (0/6) - honestly in 2 questions I went from a 80 to a 69% - it sucks. I did really well in multiple choice but my teacher is really strict on SA. Well I'm learning a lot in that class at least - I'm going to try to kick ass on the quest on Thurs - our group got everything right on the first try in the review activity we did in class today:)

***listening to l'invasione degli omini verd - great Italian rock band
***French oral topic = Brigitte Bardot

Final Decision

I have to hand in my course selection form today, I haven't decided whether or not to stay in IB but after dicussion with my IB coordinator I have decided I will delay that decision until midterms - I will hand in my course selection form and register for the 2010-2011 academic school year as a main stream student. However, if at midterms my bio mark is decent I will switch back to the IB program, this way I can play safe and if I decide to drop the IB program afterall I will get the courses I want. The downside is b/c I will not be handing in my form as an IB student now I will not be guaranteed a spot for economics and I will have to take the history/political science package instead. I think this is the best way to handle such a decision now, to ensure I will have a chance at getting into a good university after high school. I don't know if I will regret this decision but I think I am making the right choice.

Rollercoaster Ride of Decisions.

I am back to 50%-50% in the case of whether or not to stay in IB. I was down to 80% for leaving the program earlier today after talking to my guidance counselor but after talking with my dad I'm back to 50-50. My guidance counselor looked at my marks last semester and told me to drop, the only thing is, he doesn't understand that after this year my math & french don't count and the possiblity of getting 80%+ in both easily after the exams is very high. The reason to why I want to stay in IB is for IB english & IB economics, next year I'm basically taking only English (HL), Econ (HL), Chem (HL), & Bio (SL) + exercise science (regular stream course). In the worst case scenario I do poorly in both Chem & Bio but b/c of my excessiveness in taking summer school courses + language courses I can always replace Chem & Bio w/either exercise science, polisci, physics, or italian and submit to universities English (2), Econ, French, Math (2), physics, exercise science, polisci, and italian. I am so lost.....

****interesting run today

IT band is tight but I think I did a 8k PR

IT band is tight, stretched it last night with some yoga poses and it helped alot but I'm still tight. I expected my run today to be horrible but it was pretty sweet - I think I pr'ed for 8k b/c I ran with the club until roughly 2.5k and my watch said it was 3:17, I finished my run (10-11k) at 3:48 hence 31min for that 8kish run. I'm pretty surprised since I took it pretty light today with my IT band tight and all. I need to get back on track with my running, took some days off last week b/c my IT band was tight and I just wasn't feeling well - need to get back to training with the Southlake Half less than 3 months away.

Leafs vs. Sharks tonight!
Kadri got called up as well as Stalberg & Deveaux - haha Deveaux, will never forget the mental harm I pressed to him - me still thinks he can't look at an Asian girl without flinching
Go Leafs Go!

Today's Easter Island

ToK Today:
In Brief: Easter Island
In 1772, Cooke approached Easter Island where the explorers saw beautiful wooden statues however when they entered the island they found remnants of people - no one was alive. Everyone on the island was dead, these people had a religion where they had to revere to their gods and they believed to do so they had to build these beautiful statutes, in order to do so they chopped all the trees and vegetation. There is proof that these people knew they would starve and die by doing so but they kept on proceeding.

We think that these people were so stupid but in truth, we are the exact same - instead of a small island putting themselves into extinction, we today, are putting a whole planet into extinction. Today, we aren't necessarily directly building statues of gods but we are building beautiful skyscrapers of metal, polluting automobiles, and harmful nuclear weapons - we are building 'beautiful metal statues' and even though we know by doing so we are harming the earth and ourselves in the long road we continue to do so. We are no different from the people of Easter Island. Just think, some of the most furtile land in our earth is now covered by concrete & asphalt, take Toronto for example, Toronto has some of the most furtile land on our planet but nothing can be grown here - as we continue to "progress and develop" we are essentially destroying the things we need. Those 'beautiful' nuclear weapons developed by humans? we know it will kill us yet we continue to develop new ones - why? These will only harm us - in a few years we will be the people of Easter Island - we will be the people others study who have put themselves into extinctions through our worship of the gods of materialism & self power.

New Semester Tomorrow, going to buckle down and actually try.

New semester tomorrow, I'm actually kind of excited b/c it's going to be a fresh start and this semester I'm actually going to try. Last semester I only tried for math and english, and kind of dismissed chem and french which may be the reason why I have high 60s- low 70s in both - well my math is a low 60 even though I tried and I have a high 70 in english (stupid Frye test & exam is costing me a 80). Getting exam marks tomorrow, not looking forward to it b/c I know I bombed all of them:(. I'm still trying to decide whether to continue IB or not, I want to continue but it's honestly giving me really bad marks so I kind of want to quit. I think whether or not I continue depends on what I get in bio - if it's really high 80s or low 90s I'm def staying but anything lower I think I'm going to drop. I looked online and I need at least a 83% to get into kine. at McGill - if I were in academic I would get 90% easy but IB = low 70s and even high 60s. I don't know what to do, I'm so lost and confused.

***saw When in Rome w/J today. Such a cute movie. Love how I could understand the Italian in the movie.

Chapters Indigo is honestly not impressing me

I am beyond pissed right now, to the extent my fb status holds some rather colourful words, I ordered a book more than 2 weeks ago so I would have my own copy before my English exam on Tues (I like to write in books when I have to analyze them) from Chapters.Indigo (biggest bookstore in Canada) and I should have recieved it by now but I still don't have a copy of it. Not only that, but my copy of Mad Shadows by Marie-Claire Blais hasn't even been ordered. Oh, that's b/c when I ordered it from Chapters they thought they had it instock but then they realized TODAY (MORE THAN 2 WEEKS AFTER I ORDERED IT) that THEY DIDN'T HAVE A COPY OF THIS NOVELLA IN STOCK AND THEY WERE GOING TO ORDER IT TODAY - AND THAT I WOULD GET MY COPY IN 2 WEEKS. I NEED THIS BOOK NOW, NOT IN 2 WEEKS.

I called their customer service to see if I can cough up some cash to get it shipped faster - that was rather nice of me b/c I honestly don't think that I should have to pay b/c they made a serious mistake. But that only pissed me off even more b/c the woman at customer service treated me like I was retarded and an idiot who doesn't know how to read, I am just so unimpressed and disappointed with Chapter/Indigo right now, I go there for the majority of my books and I spend just less than half a grand a year there, is this how they're supposed to treat their customers? If so, I think I'll take my money somewhere else even if it means paying more or travelling a further distance b/c I am just so upset right now. I NEED THIS BOOK FOR MY EXAM.

Random Thoughts Swirling Through My Mind

I'm currently trying to read a french article to prep for my french but I keep getting really random thoughts and recalling random memories....and here are some of them
1. My body is going psycho, that long run yesterday is making my body think I'm back to training and now I want to eat everything in sight - and b/c I am really bad at denying my body carbs and whatnot my house no longer has any food
2. I want to run. NOW. - but I can't b/c it's an off day for me
3. Recalling the time my friends and I went to the Marlies vs. Lake Erie Monsters game where we lost 0-7 and my friend and I went to go watch them leave the skating portion of the rink. I called my friend D a loser b/c she was all "OMG we're soo close to them, it's soo cool", normally it's ok to call D a loser b/c of her comments but, the hockey players thought I called them a loser so one of them shot me an evil eye. My bad.
4. how after #3 occurred, D and I were at the autograph session and I asked the player if I could smack his ass
5. how after #4 occurred he said no
6. how after #4&5 occurred I still didn't get paid
7. why my mother is calling me for dinner when I already told her I can't eat another bite after finishing all her homemade beef jerky, 2 papayas, some Asian coconut bread thing, and some chocolate covered pretzels (as already stated, I ate a lot)
8. Why am I doing IB?
9. Should I drop IB?
10. What does IB like? as opposed to what I already know, what IB doesn't like.

IB Land Week One

Where is IB land? My teachers kept mentioning it but I still don't know where it is - it's probably somewhere near Geneva, Swizterland. I'm not exactly sure what IB land is but I like to imagine that IB land is an amusement park for IB teachers and such. I do have to say that everytime one of my teachers say "we're in IB land now" I want to reply that I would rather be in Neverland.
Life as an offical IB student (no more of that Pre-IB crap) is intense. I'm usually okish with math but the math we did this week is just way over the top of my head. I take math outside of school but even then it doesn't really help me very much. And this is with me taking IB SL Math - imagine if I had to take IB HL Math. I would DIE. And what is with the final mark being 40% from Math P1, 40% from Math P2, & 20% from IAs. I am going to fail math this year. I really want a 7 but I think 4 is more of the reality.
I have a feeling Chem is going to be way intense this year with it being HL chem and all, we're going to be doing labs that count toward the submitted IB labs. I am beyond freaked out about my marks right now - the fact I had 2 sub-standard science teachers in a row doesn't help.
French. I have a feeling I'm going to end up with a 4 in French. I can barely make out what my teacher is spitting out during class - I am not excited whatsoever for the orals I have to do this year. Nor am I excited for the exams I have to write in May.
Normally, I love to read but I am not exactly enjoying the book I have to read for English by Wed. The context of the book is interesting (why do we study literature) but it is written in a way that is just so confusing, and what book is this? Northope Frye's The Educated Imagination. My teacher said she read it in Year 3 of University - we're reading it in Year 1 of IB. The rest of my reading list for this year seems pretty cool though: Mad Shadows, A Streetcar Named Desire, 1984, & Oedipus Rex. I also have to do an IOP this year which will be sent to the IBO next year - this is not good as I had 2 pretty bad teachers for English in a row.
I think the only thing that turned out right for me this week was my PR for a 5k - but that might only be because I haven't ran a 5k in months I believe. But I am happy with my 21:57 - I had hoped for a sub 22 this season but since I'm already there I'm going to have to pick a new goal. I think for this season I'm just going to hope for a PR of sub 21:30.
I'm also very ecstatic that my running buddy has finally signed up for the Toronto Waterfront Half Marathon - we are going to run such a fun race. I'm hoping for a sub1:45 but I thinkin in reality I'm going to hit between 1:45-1:50.
